(Hi folks! I'm copying and pasting an explanation of what I'm doing with these "Career Mode" (I used to call them "Title Tours") projects below (the post I'm pasting was from 5 years ago, and I edited it a little bit to reflect how this method has evolved). It has an example of a career mode run with Dusty Plummer, to give you an indication of what I'm doing. I really enjoy this method, its a derivative if you will of what I'm doing already with following the champion around on his title defenses. I'll try and do better with my posting, as I do love this game! Here's the explanation below, for "Career Mode")
And now for something completely different...
We pause for a moment to try a new methodology out for grins. I've utilized this method with my feds in the FG universe, and it works well for me. Instead of playing cards per se, I embark on a number of different "Title Tours", which are de facto mini-projects focused upon a series of matches for the World Champ or the World Tag Champs.
In a nutshell, here's how this works:
*Pick a wrestler (or tag team) for whom to run a tour/project. This tour will be considered a World Title reign by that wrestler.
*Each time the designated "champ" wins, it is considered a successful defense of the title. Should he lose a match, his opponent gets to count that as a title defense in his own World Title reign history....but the designated "champ" picks right back up with the next match, still as "World Champ" for the purposes of the tour.
*For Title history's sake, when a wrestler reaches 20 successful defenses, that equals 1 World Title reign (5 defenses equals 1 Tag or Secondary Title reign, as I don't run those as often). Let's say for example, after a fair amount of time, Honest Abe is sitting on 37 successful title "defenses" after a few World Title Tours. His record would be considered as follows: He would've "held" the World Title 1 time, with 37 total defenses, and once he reaches 40 successful defenses, he would be recognized as a 2-time World Champion, and on it goes.
*Regarding the Secondary Title, it works as such (this ain't for everyone folks, but it works for me at least!): If a wrestler defeats the "World Champ" during his designated Title Tour....but, I don't deem that wrestler as being "World Champion" material, at least not yet, then he gets to count that victory as a successful defense of the "secondary" title. If this wrestler continues to win the Secondary Title enough, or "defend" it often enough, then I will move him into being eligible for "World Championship" defenses. For example, let's say Honest Abe is on a 12-match World Title Tour (Honest Abe is the champ). He's moving along, and then is upset by Tom Thumb. Not to pick on Tom, but in my world, Tom hasn't quite proven himself (Tom's not quite World Champ level right now), so I give Tom credit for a Secondary Title defense (en route to gaining 5 successful Secondary Title defenses, which would make up 1 Secondary Title reign), and move on to the next contender for "World Champ" Honest Abe. This enables me to have the World Champ face any and all contenders, while not being concerned that I'll get a wrestler to register a victory as "World Champ" who is not quite deserving of that level in my world at least.
Okay, let's begin, and maybe some of this'll make sense, by reviewing a 14 match GFP World Title Tour I just completed for Dusty Plummer. Here's the match list, and then a summary will follow:
Match results:
*Draw (time limit) against Crusher Lebrewski (***1/4).
*Loss to Johnny Hype (***).
*Loss to Johnny Hype (**1/2).
*Loss to Nikita Koloff (***). At this point, our World Champ has 0 successful defenses, and Johnny Hype has gained 2 Heritage Title defenses, while Nikita's gained a World Title defense in his record. Let's continue.
*Win over Demtor (**).
*Finally, he gains revenge against Hype with a Win over Johnny Hype (***).
*Loss to Lex Lightyear (***).
*Loss to Stalingrad (**1/4).
*Win over Lex Lightyear (*****!!! MOTYC in this return bout....good little feud here, classic NWA feel!).
*Win over Stalingrad (***).
*Win over Harlan Scurve (**).
*Win over K.O. Strongman (*). Plummer's on fire at this point, and the fans are loving their World Champion!
*Another loss to Nikita Koloff (**).
*Final match of the tour sees our champion Win over Nikita Koloff in a hot return match, culminating this feud within the Tour (****3/4!).
Notes:
*Plummer successful defended the World Title 7 times (which he records in his World Title history as 7 successful defenses, en route to his first reign of 20 defenses). He "lost" the belt 6 times (Stalingrad, Lightyear, and Koloff record their wins as "World Title" defenses in their own histories, while Hype records his wins as "Heritage" title defenses...although Hype may quickly vault to "World Champion status" if this continues! Final record for the tour: 7-6-1.
*Plummer had 4 good to great "feuds" within this reign. First was against Johnny Hype, followed by Koloff, Lightyear, and Stalingrad. Of the four, the feud against Hype was probably the best in terms of great heat, although Lightyear wasn't far behind! And the feud with Koloff was just classic!
*This model still accomplishes my ultimate goal of keeping the focus squarely on the World Title, while allowing me to bounce around to various tour projects, and not always having to churn away at one fed (which admittedly can be a challenge for me). It allows for feuds, for drama, for turns and swerves and everything else pro wrestling offers....while again, allowing me to always have multiple projects going on at one time for variety's sake....but, all within the context of one fed, which is what I want, versus multiple feds.
Just wanted to share this, as this alternate take on a World Title Tour model has a lot of appeal to me. Thanks folks.
